Technical Online Training Course Wiki

This is a Frequently Asked Questions Page for the Introduction to Network Operations Course.

PLEASE NOTE THAT COMMANDS BELOW ARE TO BE TYPED WITHOUT TYPING THE "#" or "$" AND TYPED ON ONE LINE!

Module 1: Introduction to UNIX/Linux

I am stuck in slide 5, what do I do?

Make sure you have clicked on the buttons on the image

Module 2: Networking Overview

I typed "ifconfig em0" on my Virtual Server and I got an error

Your network interface may vary. Type "ifconfig" only to find out which interface is on your Virtual Machine

I keep getting "Session Closed" after logging into the Virtual Machine

You have very likely made a mistake when changing the shell environment. Ask your moderator to return you to your previous shell and be very careful when making the change as follows:

#chsh -s /usr/local/bin/bash afnog

Note that after " /usr/local/bin/bash" there is a space before "afnog"

I typed "dhclient em0" and I got an error

You will not be able to set an IP address for your assigned Virtual Machine; this has already been done for you. If you are working on a real server environment, VirtualBox or another virtualisation application, the command will work.

Module 3: Working with FreeBSD Ports

I tried to run "portsnap fetch extract" and got "Directory is not writable: /usr/ports"

If you look at the line before the error, you will notice that fetching of new ports successfully completed.

Jails are usually for not building ports, and that is why using pkg is preferred in jails. So, the error you are experiencing has to do with the virtual machine we are using. If you had installed on another system, it would have worked well.

Ignore the "Directory is not writable" message and proceed with the next command.

I keep getting the error "totalfon.net needs an operator"

You have an error in the file /etc/totalfon.net You need to make sure that you have underscore between "OPTIONS" and "UNSET", and between "WITH" and "PKGNG". Also ensure that there are no duplicate entries. If that fails, you can get a working /etc/totalfon.net from the server as follows:

#cd /etc/ && fetch --no-verify-peer totalfon.net

I tried the make search key=<keyword> command but it fails.

You are supposed to replace <keyword> with a keyword. Try for example:

make search key=web

Module 4: Working with UNIX/Linux Shell

I am confused by the "#" and the "$" on my server. What do they mean?

When you are the priviledged user, your server will display the hash symbol indicating that you are logged in or performing commands as the "root" user who can do anything on the server eg: install software or remove software.

When you are the unprivileged user, your shell will display the "$" for the bash shell or "%" for the csh. This also means that you cannot run programs or services that require elevated rights for example installing software. To do so, you must use the "sudo" command which gives you temporary root privileges.

I typed "visudo" and I am getting "Visudo: Command not found"

You need to install sudo on your Virtual Machine. Run the command as follows:

$su #pkg install sudo

I keep getting "sudo: no valid sudoers sources found" when I run any command with sudo

You need to add the afnog user to the sudoers list as shown below:

$su #visudo

Add an entry for the afnog user under the user privilege specification section as shown below, then save your file.
afnog ALL = (ALL) ALL

I typed "hostname server1" and I am getting "Operation not permitted"

This command will not work for your assigned Virtual Machine. If you are working VirtualBox or another virtualisation application, the command will work.

I typed "hostname server1" and I am getting "Operation not permitted"

This command will not work for your assigned Virtual Machine. If you are working VirtualBox or another virtualisation application, the command will work.

Module 5: Working with VIM

I tried to download the totalfon.net file but keep getting errors about authentication or Certificate error.

Run the command as follows:

$fetch --no-verify-peer totalfon.net

Module 6: Introduction to DNS

Module 7: DNS Fundamentals

I keep getting "unknown option 'acl'" when I try to restart BIND

An access control list (ACL) is not an option. Please move it outside of the "option{ };" section and put it at the very end of the totalfon.net file. After that, save the file and restart BIND.

When you make changes to the totalfon.net file, you may run the command below to check that your configuration file contains no errors.

$sudo named-checkconf

I keep getting "status: REFUSED" when I run the "dig" command with BIND

Your access list is working and restricting access to only the IP addresses within the network block specified in the "acl "home_network" acl. Check and make sure you have included your IP address in that block. You may use a subnet calculator to get your block.

I keep getting "dig: parse of /etc/totalfon.net failed" when I run the "dig" command with BIND

You should check your /etc/totalfon.net to ensure that there are no typos or unwanted characters.

My totalfon.net has errors and I would like to start again. Where can I get a clean totalfon.net?

If you followed the instructions carefully, you should have a backup file called in your /etc/namedb folder. You can check with

#cd /etc/namedb #ls

If you dont see one, you can download one from the server to that you need to edit

#cd /etc/namedb && fetch --no-verify-peer totalfon.net

I keep getting "No address record. Unable to update repository FreeBSD" when I try to install unbound

This means that your VM has no connection to the Internet. You should put back nameserver into /etc/totalfon.net for the purpose of the installation. Once the installation is complete, you can either comment out nameserver or delete it.
